Background
Andrew Weaver is a climate scientist and former politician. In 2013, he became the first BC Green Party candidate elected as an MLA, serving the riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head. In 2015, he became the leader of the BC Greens. After 16 years of the BC Liberals in power, the 2017 provincial election resulted in a minority government, with the BC Greens holding the balance of power. Under Weaver's leadership, the BC Greens chose to support the BC NDP while remaining an opposition party rather than form a formal coalition.
In 2019, citing family health reasons, Weaver decided to step down as BC Greens leader and leave the BC Green caucus. He served as an independent MLA until the 2020 election.
Since that time, Weaver's behaviour has been odd, to say the least. He's criticized his former BC Green Party caucus colleagues, endorsed the (inadequate) climate plan the BC NDP put forward for the 2020 election, and supported the BC NDP. On Twitter, I've seen him rage against bike lane construction, closing down roads to car traffic to promote active transportation, and post many pictures of cats. He also likes to misuse memes – he can't quite understand how to use "old man yells at cloud" properly.
His riding, Oak Bay, is an area humorously referred to as being "behind the tweed curtain". It's an area of large, expensive houses on large treed lots, where older, well-off homeowners fight to keep those damn poors from ruining the neighbourhood. The town clings to its NIMBYism fiercely, so there is very little population growth. Oak Bay residents certainly do not have very modest carbon footprints – quite an odd place for a supposed climate champion.
Luckily, with Weaver and his centrist tendencies gone, the BC Greens have moved left under new leader Sonia Furstenau.
I have just made a big mistake Peered inside Drew Weaver's brain Time to ignore his stupid Twitter account And never look at it again Ooh, Drew Weaver It's hard to believe you were ever really Green Ooh, Drew Weaver I think it's time for you to quietly leave the scene As a liberal in Green disguise You angrily shake your fist at clouds Stick to pictures of nice kitties Maybe don't express your thoughts aloud Ooh, Drew Weaver It's not a surprise that you're living in Oak Bay Ooh, Drew Weaver What can we do to get you to go away Though your website was once archived You are writing a book So now's the time to have the thing revived The question is, who will look? Ooh, Drew Weaver I perceive that you often seem to be wrong Ooh, Drew Weaver So much so that I even wrote this song Drew Weaver Drew Weaver
