Official Green Day music video
Background
Ever since I heard the news that John Horgan would not be seeking reelection as an MLA, I've intended to write a parody song to properly celebrate his retirement. Ideally, I'd put together a slideshow of pictures/videos of famous Horgan faux pas and have someone record a version of the song to accompany it. So I had to think of a famous song that would do well in that kind of format.
I've been also been trying to cover "newer" songs – song created anytime after the early 1990s, which is when popular music died 😇 – and songs sung by women. While I wasn't able to hit all of my targets, I found a "newer" song that works perfectly: Green Day's "Good Riddance".
For the record: I'm not a Green Day fan. A lot of people use this song to evoke nostalgia, but I find it cheesy and lame. But it's popular and parodiable, and cheesy and lame nostalgia is exactly the kind of sentiment I wanted from a Horgan retirement song.
Most of the lyrics should be relatively self-explanatory, but if anyone is confused: "one last bouquet for your fall guy" refers to incoming Premier-Anoint David Eby. And the title "Bad Rubbish" refers to the saying "good riddance to bad rubbish".
How I made the connection between "Good Riddance" and John Horgan: on at least two occasions, Horgan has told his critics to "get a life" ("get a hobby"). I came up with the line "I hope you find some time to get a life" and built the rest of the song around it, and those two sound clips/videos would be a part of the slideshow I mentioned above.
And while I certainly agree with his position on the so-called "Freedom" Convoy people, his tendency to tell people who disagree with him to 'find something better to do' is ripe for parody. After all, given how poorly he performed his duties, it would be pretty hard for him to find something worse to do during his retirement 🤞
Lyrics
Schmuck Another turning point, BC's at a crossroad You had your way with it – it's now in the commode We must confess our politesse has waved goodbye You ran away, one last bouquet for your fall guy Your tenure was despicable It ending's a delight I hope you find some time to get a life And while the temperature continues its incline There's still some oil and gas for businesses to mine Supporting companies ahead of folks is vile If there was justice, we would put you all on trial Your party's unforgiveable It's rarely ever right And caused a monumental loss of life BC is barely livable It's become a treeless blight But hey, you get to spend time with your wife Your lifestyle is so comfortable But the kids are not alright You're just another capitalist low-life
